Romanticising about enjoying a creamy gelato while snapping a selfie in front of the Leaning Tower of Pisa on a warm summer’s day? Sounds like a dream, right? It doesn’t have to be.

We spoke to Lynette Machiri, Customer Experience Leader at Flight Centre South Africa, about whether a European summer getaway is still on the cards for South Africans (spoiler alert: it sure is!).

Q: Is it realistically possible for a South African to book a European summer holiday now?

A: Absolutely. While it requires some swift action, planning an epic European summer holiday is still very achievable for South African passport holders. Fortunately, despite anticipated delays leading up to peak season, Schengen visa processing times are good. You can expect to have your visa in hand approximately 20 – 25 working days after booking your appointment*.

Once you’re sure you’ll be taking the plunge to enjoy the European summer, it’s vital not to delay booking your visa appointment. This is the most critical step, and lead times can fluctuate.

Also, some compromises on your ideal destinations and dates might be necessary. Flexibility is your friend!  Think about alternative airports, smaller cities connected by excellent European rail networks, or even travelling slightly off-season in late August and September, where you might catch the tail-end of summer.

Remember that travel experts have access to up-to-the-minute information and industry partnerships. They can help you navigate limited availability, find creative flight routes, and source accommodation that suits your budget and style.

Q: Could you give us a quick timeline breakdown?

A: If you plan to depart for Europe in mid-June, the latest you should book your flights and accommodation and apply for a visa appointment is around mid-May – preferably sooner.

To be safe, it’s ideal to allow yourself six weeks between securing your visa appointment and your departure date. Remember, visa processing times are subject to change, so the sooner you apply, the better!

Q: What does flight availability look like, and do you have any cost-saving tips?

A: Summer is the peak travel season, so flight availability to major European hubs is naturally more limited. However, flexibility and a bit of creativity can make a big difference. As mentioned, it’s best to consider flying into smaller regional airports within your desired region. These often have better availability and could also be more budget-friendly. Europe’s train networks make connecting to your final destination a breeze.

It’s also worthwhile exploring flights with stopovers in lesser-travelled countries. These often offer interesting layovers for quick city exploration and can lead to significant cost savings. Think of it as getting two destinations for the price of one!

Finally, I recommend flying on weekdays or taking red-eye flights if your schedule allows.

Q: And what about finding accommodation this close to peak season?

A: Finding accommodation during the European summer rush can be challenging but not impossible. You must be realistic and understand that availability will be tighter and prices higher, especially in popular cities. Be prepared to adjust your expectations. Of course, don’t limit yourself to hotels in the city centre. Look into charming bed and breakfasts in smaller towns and budget-friendly accommodations. As always, Europe’s incredible public transport systems have got you covered.

Q: Could you share why European summer holidays are so popular?

A: Where to start? The warm, sunny days and long evenings are perfect for exploring, strolling through outdoor markets, or dining al fresco. Plus, the European summer aligns perfectly with South African school holidays, making it an excellent time for family adventures. Summer in Europe is also buzzing with world-class events. Think Formula 1 races, iconic tennis tournaments like Wimbledon, music festivals galore, and countless cultural celebrations in historic towns and cities.

Q: For budget-conscious travellers, are there any general tips for making a European summer trip more affordable?

A: Yes, definitely! While Europe has a reputation for being expensive – especially in the summer – there are clever ways to stretch your Rand. Firstly, try to avoid tourist traps and overpriced restaurants. Seek out smaller eateries, markets, and street food vendors for authentic and cost-effective cuisine.

Many European cities offer a wealth of free experiences. Explore parks and green spaces, wander through historic neighbourhoods, or take advantage of free walking tours and museums with free entry days.

Also, take advantage of Europe’s many low-cost airlines to hop between countries or cities—and pack light to avoid excess baggage fees.

Q: What is the overall cost for South Africans to have a European summer holiday, including visas, flights, and accommodation?

A: The overall cost of a European summer holiday can vary greatly depending on several factors, such as your travel style, destinations, length of stay, and the time of booking. Getting a personalised quote from a Flight Centre Travel Expert is essential to get the most accurate picture. That said, depending on ROE, you’ll need to factor in the cost of your Schengen visa – approximately R2,500 per traveller. If travelling to Paris during high season as a solo traveller, you’re going to pay around R26,000 for economy class return flights, R4,500 for transfers, and R26,000 for accommodation (a classic room for two) for a seven-night holiday***.

Costs are similar, although a bit more expensive, per traveller for a seven-night holiday in Rome during the European summer – just over R3,000 for your visa, R41,000 for economy class return flights, R4,300 for transfers, and R20,300 for accommodation (a classic room for two).

Ultimately, you’re looking at a 20 – 40% saving if travelling during low season compared to high season, depending on your destination.

Remember, in addition to these costs, you’ll need to factor in transportation costs within Europe, daily food costs, the price of activities, and any other unexpected expenses that may come your way.

While it might have seemed far out of reach, as you can see, a European summer holiday is closer than you think! With careful planning, flexibility, and expert guidance, you can make that summer dream a reality.
