The Future is Now: Tech trends that will shape 2023

It has been 28 years since the global release of the game-changing PlayStation One. Since then, humanity has developed self-driving cars, smartphones and space craft that can be sent into orbit and retrieved without destroying them. Technology is evolving incredibly rapidly and 2023 promises to be no different. This year, advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), the metaverse, the Internet of things (IoT), and virtual reality could leave us on the cusp of a future no one could have imagined two decades ago.

Where could these advancements take us and what may some of their practical applications be? Well for starters…

AI in your home:

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been a buzzword in the tech industry for several years now. As it has continued to improve, companies like Sony have been able to make key advancements in the field that have allowed it to develop innovative products and services. For example, with Sony’s Cognitive Processor XR™, BRAVIA TVs use a new processing method that goes beyond conventional AI by replicating the way humans see and hear in the real world. Have you ever wanted to shoot beautiful photography but never had the “eye” for it? Cutting edge AI technology like Sony’s Real-time Eye Auto-Focus (AF) makes it possible to shoot like a professional photographer, with perfect focus on the eye in a split-second.

Another area where AI is set to play a significant role is in gaming. With the popularity of esports and online gaming continuing to grow, companies are exploring ways to use AI to enhance the gaming experience. This includes using AI to create more realistic and immersive gaming environments, develop more intelligent and responsive non-playable characters, and to enable more sophisticated multiplayer interactions.

The Metaverse in South Africa

For a moment it looked like the metaverse would be a flash in the pan but this year it promises to start making good on its initial promise. According to a recent survey, more than 16% of South Africans have participated in the metaverse or virtual worlds. Last year also saw several major South African firms take their first steps into the Metaverse for the first time, making them pioneers on the African continent.

The metaverse is not only a live network space where people can share time and space, but it also has a social element. Companies like Sony will consequently focus their metaverse strategies on creating localised content and experiences that cater to those markets, especially in the realms of music, games, and sport.

One way Sony plans to capitalise on this is through its latest invention, a wearable motion-tracking system called Mocopi. The new system, similar to motion capture suits, is comprised of six colourful sensors that are placed on various points of the body to capture human movements in real time and link them to an avatar. Metaverse continues to evolve over time and Sony will continue to contribute to its expansion through the brand’s diverse businesses and key areas.

The Power of Three: Other technologies that will define 2023:

5G technology is set to be a game-changer in 2023. With faster speeds and lower latency, 5G will enable new applications and use cases that were previously not possible. Sony is well positioned to take advantage of this, especially in the field of gaming technology.

Blockchain technology could transform a wide range of industries, from finance to healthcare to logistics. Companies across the globe are exploring ways to use blockchain to leverage the unique capabilities of blockchain. This could include creating secure digital identities, developing decentralized marketplaces, and creating more transparent and efficient supply chains.

Quantum computing is an emerging technology that has the potential to revolutionize computing as we know it. While still in its early phases, this technology’s computing power could unlock an entirely new future.

Predicting the future is always a tricky proposition but, given current technology trends and the direction they seem to be moving in, the time between now and December 31st promises to be one of radical positive change. Organisations across the world are optimising their use of technology and, if applied correctly, that can only benefit us in the long run.
