Sony South Africa announced at their IFA event in Johannesburg a couple of new devices and wearables. Introduced was the Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact, Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, Xperia E3, Sony Smartwatch 3 and the new Sony SmartBand Talk.
The Xperia Z3 which is the flagship device of the announcement promises a two day battery life. The device is IP68 certified compared to the Z2 which is IP58 certified. The device also features a Quad-core 2.5 GHz processor with 3GB of RAM.
The Xperia Z3 Compact features the same rounded edges as the Z3 with a bigger screen thanks to a slimmer bezel. The device also comes in a range of colours which had everyone’s attention!
The Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is 6.4 mm slim and weighs less than 260 grams so it’s easy to carry around. It’s also waterproof so you can take it in the pool or bath!
PlayStation 4 Remote Play streaming was demoed but since the setup wasn’t final, we were asked to not take any photos. The Remote play allows you to stream any game on your PS4 to a compatible device. According to Sony, compatible devices are the Sony Xperia Z3, Z3 Compact and Z3 Tablet Compact but in the future, older models could be supported.
The Xperia E3 is a budget device which borrows the “flagship design” of the Z3 Compact. Even though it is made of plastic and not glass like the other flagship phones, it is a Sony and therefore has the robust build quality and design language that is true to the latest Sony devices.
Smartwatches are the latest craze and Sony improved on their previous Smartwatch by going for more of a fitness watch look with a rubber band. The Smartwatch 3 also runs Android Wear like the other players in the Smartwatch market!
Sony introduced the SmartBand talk which is an upgrade to the SmartBand. The SmartBand talk is a fitness tracker with an e ink display. The display can be used for checking the time, checking steps, activity and to see who is calling. Using the built-in microphone and speaker, one can interact with the band via voice as well as answer and make calls. Just like the previous SmartBand, you can perform actions with gestures such as a tap on the band to pause a song.
