Get your own car instead of public transport - The New Datsun GO review

Many in South Africa use public transport day in and day out, taking multiple taxis, buses or trains per day. Using public transport takes more time than having your own car as you often have to switch vehicles and wait for the next available seat. Well in most cases, people make seats. You also have to pay for each time you start a new trip. What most don’t realize is that the money they spend per day adds up to an amount that could be used to pay off a car. This is what Datsun have proven with the launch of the new Datsun GO!

According to Datsun, if you can afford to spend around R87 per day on public transport, you can afford to pay a monthly fee to have your own vehicle. So the question is, should you rather put your hard earned cash into the Datsun GO and have your own vehicle or should you rather use public transport. Let’s find out:

The Datsun GO allows you to GO wherever you want whenever. This is done in a sporty compact vehicle with bold styling with aggressive lines and curves. Instead of a box shaped taxi, you will drive in a vehicle with a honeycomb style grille, chrome detailing, daytime running lights and 14″ steel/alloy wheels. In 6 colours, you can stand out from the crowd and express yourself.

Instead of sitting cramped up in a hot taxi, you will enjoy the space and comforts of your own vehicle with a 7 inch Infotainment system which supports Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and has Bluetooth, USB and an auxiliary port! With Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, you can stream music from your phone, get directions and answer calls! You will even be super cool with air conditioning on those hot stuffy days. With rear parking sensors, you will be able to park with ease, even when a taxi is waiting to pass.

Not only will you travel in style, you will also get there faster thanks to the 3 Cylinder 1.2 litre engine which delivers 50kW and 104 Nm of torque with a top speed of 161km/h. If you are in a rush, you can even get from 0-100km/h in 13.3 seconds! All of this is done using a 5 speed manual gearbox which is smooth but also provides adequate power for the first time driver.

Yes, when you have your own car you have to spend cash on something you will never get to see, petrol. Luckily, the new Datsun GO is very light on fuel and uses around 5.2L per 100km! Those KMs can GO anywhere, even side streets! So instead of having to walk the last bit, you can use your Datsun GO to get you there.

You will also certainly be safer in the Datsun GO than in a Taxi which uses a spanner for a steering wheel and bricks for brakes. With 2 front airbags for the driver and passenger, Anti-lock braking system (ABS) and an improved structural rigidity, the GO will keep you safer as you drive life to the full. Certainly much safer than the previous generation Datsun GO. You also get central locking and an immobilizer to keep you and your car protected. To sweeten the deal, you get a year’s free insurance when you buy the Datsun GO!

The Datsun GO comes in two trim levels, the Mid and Lux. You will be happy to know that loads come as standard such as the infotainment system, digital tachometer, drive computer, gear shift guide and parking sensors! If you want LED Daytime running lights, a rear wiper and 14 inch alloy wheels, then GO for the Lux. The Mid starts from R144,500 and the Lux starts from R165,500.

Does that sound like a lot of money to you? Do you know how much you are spending every month on public transport? Let’s say you spend R87 per day. That is R2610 per month on public transport. You will need to swap taxis, switch to buses, maybe catch an Uber and spend most of your time waiting. You will also have to walk the last distance to your house/office. The Datsun GO Lux will cost you R98 per day (with a 0% deposit) which includes insurance for the first year. That means you could spend roughly R2940 per month on your own vehicle! It is a no brainier! With a 3-Year/100 000km service plan, you have peace of mind that everything will be taken care of.

If you need more seats to take all your friends around, you should look at the Datsun GO+ which has 7 seats and starts from R154200.

You could continue to use public transport everyday or you could get yourself your own vehicle with your own space, an infotainment system, your own music and air-con. With the new Datsun GO, you have the freedom to GO wherever you want, whenever you want. Now that certainly sounds like freedom to me.
