Pepkor Holdings Limited has donated two truckloads of maize meal (equivalent to 675 000 meals) to the DoMore Foundation to provide much-needed meals to families across KwaZulu-Natal. The DoMore Foundation does exemplary charitable work in communities, including feeding schemes for children and vulnerable families in KZN.

The group has expressed deep concern over the impact the floods have had on affected communities and their families. Its top priority is the safety of its staff and contributing to relief efforts in a way that has a real and immediate impact.

PEP has felt the impact of the floods first-hand, with its Isipingo Distribution Centre sustaining significant damage, which has disrupted supply chains. The distribution centre is currently closed, with recovery operations having commenced. Contingency plans are already underway for stores to be serviced by its Cape Town and Johannesburg-based distribution centres.

Leon Lourens, CEO of Pepkor, says the full extent of the damage is not yet quantified. He commends the Isipingo Distribution Centre team on their courage and commitment to employee safety. He adds, “We have been deeply saddened by the severe impact the floods have had on so many people’s lives and livelihoods. We are deeply entrenched in this community and our priority is to play our part in ongoing relief efforts.”

“During the civil unrest last year, 549 of our stores were looted. We donated over 5,000 food parcels to our staff and saw the immediate impact this had. At the same time, we provided more than 70 tonnes of maize meal to the DoMore Foundation. As a business we strive to make a difference in people’s lives and through our on-going partnership with DoMore, we can reach multiple families and provide a warm, comforting meal during an unbelievably tough time.”

“We commend the DoMore Foundation on the tireless and critical work it is doing right now. We also challenge all other corporates to contribute towards supporting the needy in KwaZulu-Natal during these extremely challenging times. It is during times like these that we really see the South African spirit of togetherness come to the fore.”
