If there is one thing you should know about me, besides for how well I backup my files, it is how crazy I am about security. I take the rather safe than sorry approach when it comes to locking doors or making sure I wasn’t followed.
Ring recently got in touch and I asked if I would like to check out one of their devices in their home security system range. Ring, which is actually owned by Amazon, has a range of home security products, perfect for a home security solution. Knowing that I am doing an apartment renovation, I have been considering what security upgrades I can make. So the timing was spot on!
The Smart Doorbell Camera:
I was sent over the Ring Video Doorbell Generation 2 which is a Smart Doorbell Camera that is placed on or next to your front door, much like a normal doorbell, but the Ring Video Doorbell is no ordinary Doorbell!
The Ring Video Doorbell features a camera to keep an eye on your home so you keep your home more secure whether you are home or not. By simply using the Ring App, you can have a live view of your front door as well as get motion alerts when there is movement at your door. When movement is detected, a notification will appear on your phone which lets you know which Ring Device has picked up movement and shows a preview of the person. This preview can then be opened for a full view.
If the Doorbell is pressed, the light will go blue and the person will hear a sound to let them know that the button has been pressed. The sound, as well as the volume, can be set in the Ring App.
When someone rings your doorbell, you can see them in 1080p HD Video and communicate with them thanks to the Two-Way talking ability.
The Video Doorbell has night vision so you can see who is at your door even when it is dark! In the Ring App, you can also see your video history, to see what went down when you weren’t around. This footage can be shared on Social Media straight from the app.
Lastly, you don’t need to worry if there is rain as the Video Doorbell is Water-resistant!
Setting up and using the Ring Video Doorbell:
To get started, you should first charge the Ring Video Doorbell. Once this is done, the Video Doorbell is turned on by pressing the orange button at the rear. Then download the Ring App on your Android or Apple device, create an account, search for the Ring Video Doorbell and get it connected to your WiFi.
Once this is complete, you need to mount the video doorbell at your door. The Ring Video Doorbell comes with screws, a screwdriver, and a spirit level, so you can mount it easily!
Once connected and installed, which only took me 15 minutes and it was my first time using a Ring device, the Ring App is the place to go to tweak any settings. You can set Modes, snooze the motion mode, adjust the motion settings, check device health and power settings, plus more!
You can also sign up for Ring Protect, which lets you Record and capture up to 60 days of footage and then share!
If you are travelling and won’t have time to monitor the Ring App, you can provide access to your neighbours, friends or family, using the Guest Access mode, so they can get notifications should someone be at your door!
You can also buy a Ring chime so you can hear the doorbell anywhere in your home.
Battery Life:
When it comes to power, you can either charge the non-removable battery via a USB cable, or you can get an electrician to hardwire it so you don’t have to keep charging the battery. The battery should last 1,000 activations before it needs to be recharged.
Price:
The Ring Video Doorbell 2 comes in at R 2299.00, which may seem like a lot, but the overall experience and quality you get from Ring is next level. And you can’t put a price on security, now can you? The Video Doorbell can be purchased through Takealot, iStore, Builders Warehouse, Incredible Connection, and Leroy Merlin.
You can buy the Ring Video Doorbell and other Ring Devices on Takealot.

Verdict:
The Ring Video Doorbell is a great way to keep an eye on your home. Thanks to its motion detection feature, you will know if someone is at your door, even if they don’t ring you. The Camera and microphone allow you to easily have a conversation with whoever is there, which is handy if a friend is waiting for you and you are running late!
