Many are writing exams now and getting ready to take a much needed break from being a student. Parents on the other hand are worrying how they will keep the family busy and out of mischief. If you are going to be in Cape Town for the holidays or you live here and don’t know what to do, you are in luck. Caltex have asked me to put a list of fun activities to do in the day time or over the weekend in Cape Town! I am going to keep these affordable and fun for all!
Table Mountain:
The most iconic landmark in Cape Town, Table Mountain is not a 7th wonder of the world for nothing. Take your family up the cable car, then do a short hike or a long one if you are up for it. The cable car ride is really calm so if you are scared, there is really no need to worry. Then enjoy a cup of tea or a slice or two of chocolate cake at the Table Mountain Cafe. Don’t forget to take a camera with to capture the amazing views as well as a jacket as it can get pretty windy.
Two Oceans Aquarium
The Aquarium is not only a fun place to visit but it is really informative. There are over 3000 different animals at the aquarium so it is best to arrive early so you can spend as much time as you wish. One of my favourite activities to do at the Aquarium is to visit the touch pool where you can pick up, touch and feel a variety of marine animals and plants. The animals do need to eat and feeding time can be viewed from a few locations. Watch the penguins being fed or if you are daring, shark feeding time is fun, as long as you are not the food.
Red Bus
You have probably seen these bright red double-decker busses driving around Cape Town. Choose which tour you want to go on and catch one at the marked sign. You can hop off and catch another bus later on so you are free to explore in different locations. This saves you the hassle of driving and parking and you get to enjoy wind in your hair.
Public Art
Starting in Camps Bay and ending in Mouille Point, the Atlantic Seaboard coastline has become an art gallery. Pieces such as the throne in Camps Bay or the sunglasses in Sea Point are a huge attraction which will bring out the photographer in anyone. I suggest you start in Camps Bay and get the kids to keep a look out for the pieces on display. There are also photos on the wall along the Beach Front in Sea Point.
Rent a bicycle and cycle the Atlantic Seaboard
There is no better way than to see Cape Town by bike. If you don’t own a bicycle or if it’s at home, you will be happy to know that you can rent one from Up Cycles. You can pick up a bike from Up Cycles in Sea Point or Camps Bay and drop the bike off at any location. It is best to cycle on the Promenade, which is allowed, or the pavement. I personally prefer the pavement as there are less people but the Promenade is nice as you cycle along the coast line. A nice route is to the Waterfront or Camps Bay and you get to see the public art along the way!
Have a great holiday in Cape Town!
