Capitec Bank has launched its facial biometrics feature which allows you to open a bank account from the comfort and safety of your home, with the whole process taking place via their new Capitec Banking app, which is available on either IOS or Android.
Using their banking app and your phone’s camera, your identity is verified against records at Home Affairs and checks that there is an actual (live) person in front of the camera and not a photo. This is done by using facial recognition technology as well as scanning in an identity document such as your ID book, Smart ID Card, or Passport. This process happens instantly and is seamless!
I was recently contacted by Capitec to test out this new simplified account activation process and have also created a step by step how to, which you can watch in action here:

To get started, you simply download the Capitec App. You then scan in your identity document, verify yourself by scanning your face, sign some forms using your face, and then the process is complete and you have access to a Capitec bank account as well as your virtual card.

I found it super easy and the whole process took me around 15 minutes or so. Once I had done the setup, I was able to login to their banking app and use my virtual card to make online payments and even buy shares through their EasyEquities widget. The best part? I did not need to leave home and spend hours in a queue! Well done Capitec for bringing this innovative feature and making banking even simpler!
