Ways to quickly save for December

There’s seriously only a few weeks until you get to go on holiday and whether you’re planning on staying at home or going away, time off costs a few more Rands than we usually reckon on. If you’re like us, you’re probably wondering how you’re going to afford any form of a treat at all. Maybe you’ve already resigned that you’re too broke for fun this year.

Oh heck no. We simply won’t allow for this. You deserve a bit of fun!

You might be surprised to learn this, but there are ways to save cash even this late in the game so that you can put a bit more ‘fabulous’ into your summer vacation. We’ve actually got things that you can do right now to snag some mad money for your holiday. Just be prepared, because following these steps does involve a bit of sacrifice on your part.

Freeze your luxury subscriptions

Sorry guys, but this tip is going to be tough. Take a breath, sit down, and make a list of your accounts or subscriptions. The 1s that aren’t strictly necessary, like your satellite TV, the gym, magazines, games, and other apps that you pay for every month. You will save sooo much money by pausing or cancelling those subscriptions that aren’t actually necessary. And do note that we’re not talking about things like your insurance policies. Cancelling an insurance policy to save money actually exposes you to a lot of financial loss. Really, we can’t say this with enough strength: Don’t expose yourself to risk by cancelling your car insurance just for a week in Cape Town.

It’s not worth it.

Check that you’re not paying too much for insurance

While we’re talking about insurance, you should also see if you can change to cheaper cover. For example, King Price offers affordable car insurance which decreases monthly in line with the depreciation of your car, so it’s worth getting a few quotes to make sure you’re paying the least amount possible for the same quality of cover.

Stop eating out

You and your bank account are going on a serious saving diet. We’re not saying that you should stop buying groceries and live off of bread and water for the next few weeks. We mean that you should stop buying takeaways, going out for coffee and cake, buying canteen burgers at the office, paying for sneaky snacks from the office vending machine, and spending heaps on fancy dinners.

Also, make sure to only go grocery shopping when you’ve actually run out of food. Not when you’re bored with what’s in the fridge.

Walk, don’t drive

This tip might not apply to everyone and it might not apply to every situation… But where possible, choose to walk to your destination instead of driving there. You have no idea how much you’ll save on fuel by not revving up the car for every little trip to the shops.

Turn your junk into cash

Have you considered hosting a car boot sale? We’ll bet you a trip to Zanzibar (or at least Cape Town) that you’ve got some clothes, bric-a-brac, old DVDs, appliances and… you, know, junk that you don’t need any more. Instead of letting these items clutter up the house, sell it and put the cash towards your holiday.

It might not sound particularly easy upon first sight, but these tips are practical and can make quite a difference to your holiday budget. Good luck!
