Volkswagen makes waves of change in support of ocean sustainability and South African surfers

As the proud supporters of the 2018 City Surf Series, the Volkswagen SA Open of Surfing and The Dyer Island Conservation Trust, Volkswagen South Africa is bringing the beach inland to show commitment to the sustainability of our oceans.

As part of the beach culture of the 1960’s, Volkswagen and the Kombi in particular have always been about freedom, the outdoors and the open road. It invokes thoughts of surfing, travel, camping and good times. So just before Joburgers flock to the beaches for the Festive Season, Volkswagen is highlighting the importance of protecting our oceans and supporting the local surfing community through a fun family experience in two popular shopping centres.

With a long standing history in South Africa’s surfing culture, Volkswagen remains committed to driving local surfing forward through initiatives like the City Surf Series, which enables surfers to compete in global competitions right on South Africa’s shores. At the same time, Volkswagen is raising awareness for the conservation efforts focused on our fragile marine eco-system with partners, Dyer Island Conservation Trust.

A symbolic wave was created using upcycled plastic bottles, creating a spectatular installation. Volkswagen is urging people to take a stand against plastic waste by taking a photo on the wave at the installation and sharing their pledge with the world.

For those wanting to dive right in and support the cause – and take home a token – they can donate towards the trust at the craft table. Here local crafters turn trash into treasure by fashioning the marine icons of Dyer Island, like penguins and sharks, out of the very material putting the animals futures in danger.

“Volkswagen’s giant upcycled wave is a symbol of how we all need to participate in creating a more sustainable future. We are humbled to work with passionate partners like the City Surf Series and the Dyer Island Conservation Trust who enable us to do this in a meaningful way,” commented Mark Handley, Head of Sales and Marketing for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.

Family and holiday friendly vehicles will also be on display, including the California Coast, Caddy Camper and the V6 Amarok. So jump on board with Volkswagen to help drive a more sustainable future for our oceans and surfers.
