If you are looking for a way to turn your waste at home into compost, instead of just throwing it in the bin, well then the iCompost Kitchen Composter may be the solution you have been waiting for. I was recently sent the iCompost Kitchen Composter to try out and see how easy and affordable it is to turn left over items in the kitchen into usable compost at the touch of a button.
The creators of iCompost found that people were looking for ways to avoid their food waste going to landfills. Having a compost heap at home doesn’t look great, smell nice and attracts flies. But with technology, these concerns can be irradiated. This is how the iCompost Kitchen Composter came about. A product that is easy to use and not that expensive to own, so that anyone can compost at home!
There are three steps to turn your kitchen waste into compost using the iCompost Kitchen Composter.
Firstly, you need to fill the 2L bin with all types of food waste gathered throughout the day. iCompost can take any food waste including fruit, veg, tea bags, coffee grounds, egg shells, animal products and small bones.
To assist with transformation, the included compost activator must be added in. The Compost Activator is a locally made additive which enables the machine to produce compost, as well as absorb odours. One sachet is needed per cycle. By adding the Compost Activator to the cycle, iCompost produces an early-stage compost. This can be mixed directly into the soil around plants, or fed to an earthworm farm for further maturing.
Once the bin is filled with waste, simply press the start button, which will kick off the process. The UV light dries up the waste, and then the blades grind the waste into small pieces so that it can be composted faster. The waste is then cooled and UV sterilised. iCompost has an ultraviolet light to disinfect any nasty diseases that may be present in the food waste. The Carbon Filter removes any odours that may be in your food waste to ensure your home doesn’t start to smell. This ensures that the machine can be used indoors. In roughly 4 to 6 hours, you will have compost. The process is odourless thanks to the carbon filter system and doesn’t even make much noise besides for a humming sound! At the end of the cycle, you are left with soil in the removable bin, which you can easily take with you to your garden.
You now have a dry natural and nutrient-rich soil amendment which you can use for plants, lawns and gardens.
When it comes to cleaning the process is easy. The bowl and blades can be cleaned in the dishwasher, or the self-clean option can be used.
What does it cost?
To run the machine, you are looking at using 0.7kWh of energy which costs around R1.30. The iCompost sells for R6500 each, and you can buy a bag of compost activator for R60 and replacement air filters for R100 each.
So what is the verdict?
The iCompost is perfect for those that want to do their part and turn their garbage into useable compost. The machine is easy to use, doesn’t let off any smells, only makes a bit of noise, and is easy to clean. The price may seem high but can you place a cost don’t taking care of the environment?
