The festive season literally just left, like 5 minutes ago. If we’re honest, it kind of feels like it actually melted away in this heat. It has been very hot, even for our usually warm South African summers. In spite of the heat, and even though 2020 is off like a shot in the dark, many of us are still hanging on to that holiday feeling. Some of us still have the odd wisp of tinsel hanging around, while others are tucking into leftovers. What really helps to keep this time alive is the loot. You know what we’re talking about… The holiday stash. The items of goodwill and merriment that you and your loved 1s gifted each other with. The presents.
Yes, of course, the memories and good times are worth more than any gifts you could receive… But the presents are pretty special, too. We went around the Internet and talked to our own nearest and dearest in order to find the top 10 gifts that people got over 2019 and 2020. It’s actually rather incredible how many people received these stand-out items over other special things, like books, perfume, and jewellery.
The top 10 gifts that people got over 2019/2020:
- Apple AirPods (or other wireless earbuds).
- Pressure cooker to whip together meals at the speed of light.
- Robot vacuum to clear up the holiday mess.
- Weighted blankets to keep you centred and calm as you go into the new year.
- Kindle Paperwhite, because people are serious about their top 100 booklist.
- Fitness trackers to track steps, sleep, heart rate, and various activities.
- Diffusers to send sweet and calming scents to soothe the holiday stresses away.
- Philips Airfryer (or another good airfryer) because who says you can’t enjoy crispy treats.
- Noise-cancelling headphones.
- Coffee snob stuff, whether it’s a drip coffee maker or fancy milk frother.
What we can definitely see from this list is that most of these items are not cheap. No sirree. And while a few of these might be a bit hefty to lug around (unless you like taking your airfryer or pressure cooker for a walk around the neighbourhood) most are actually geared towards a life that’s lived out-and-about. Like the earbuds, Kindle, headphones, and fitness trackers.
These gifts were (expensive) thoughtfully picked out and are (expensive) sure to bring you all the joys (because they were expensive)… But let’s be real. Going into a new year is a big thing. It requires all of your energy and when that happens, we tend to drop little balls here and there. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself wondering exactly which Checkers counter you left your Apple AirPods at. Hey, these things happen.
