Most of us are used to tightening the old financial belt, although nowadays it feels more like there’s a python giving our waists a good squeeze. It’s been a tough couple of years and we’ve all had to be more frugal than ever to cope with economic pressures.
However, not everything should be the cheapest option. Some things should rightfully cost you much less and some things should cost a little more if you want them to last and serve their purpose. The risk is that you could also very well end up spending more in the long run.
Here are some things you should spend more money on (and 1 thing you can, and should, spend less on).
Things you should consider spending more on
Your mattress
You can’t expect to function at full capacity if you aren’t sleeping well because your mattress is giving you grief. This is definitely an area in which you should do your best to spend the most that you can. Of course, if you’re able to find a high quality, expensive mattress on a discount then that’s amazing! But don’t buy a poor quality, cheap mattress… They don’t last long and you end up with backache and no sleep after a few short months.
Large appliances
There’s a lot of sense in buying second hand items, but if there’s 1 thing that every thrifter will gladly tell you it’s that second hand large appliances will simply not last. When it comes to home appliances, spending a little extra for a better brand that offers more features and lasts that much longer is very definitely worth it.
Running shoes
We’ve all fallen victim to the fast fashion options out there, knowing full well that the fabric and cut won’t look good for longer than a season or 2. But when it comes to running shoes, there’s no getting away from the fact that cheaper just won’t do.
You’ll know after 1 run around the block that you’ve made a mistake.
It’s far better for your health and fitness to spend more. Quality running shoes are more likely to give you the support that your body needs while you exercise.
Dental care
The reality is that while we can do our best to brush and floss our teeth twice a day, there are going to be issues that a dentist needs to look at if we don’t also go for regular check-ups and cleanings.
Don’t spend money on cheap gimmicky solutions that you see on social media. Instead, spend a little more and visit your dentist regularly to prevent small issues from becoming painful and expensive problems. Your older self will thank you for giving your teeth the ability to chew and look good in a picture well into your twinkle years.
1 thing to spend less on
Some things don’t have to cost that much, and 1 of those things is car insurance. South Africa is home to several reputable insurance companies that have developed policies that offer consumers quality cover at a reasonable price.
This gives us all the opportunity to compare quotes from different insurers to find the car insurance policy that covers everything we need it to, at the price that we can afford.
For example, there’s this comprehensive car insurance product that quite literally decreases in price every single month without skimping on the level of cover that you’ll receive. According to the insurer, the amount your premium decreases by is determined by the rate of depreciation that your car undergoes as time passes. They feel that it’s only fair to keep your insurance cost in line with the value of your car.
As you can see, there’s simply no need to pay more for your insurance than is necessary. Not when there are reputable insurers offering you super cheap car insurance!
