Who are Sloom:
Sloom is a South African mattress brand that was established in 2016 by Rudo Kemp, who used to work in a foam factory and also owned a bed shop. Rudo saw that finding the right mattress was not always possible by just visiting a bed shop. The first issue is finding a mattress that is comfortable for you. And the second is time, you can’t just lie on a bed and decide there and then. So Rudo decided to bring a new type of mattress and offering, to South Africa, to solve this issue. Sloom’s products are designed to eliminate the confusion and frustration of commission-driven, high markup beds in the South African Market.

The Delivery and Unboxing:
I ordered a Sloom mattress and two pillows from the Sloom online store. The order arrived after about 2 days, in two separate boxes. To get the mattress out of the box, one simply opens the box and pulls out the rolled-up Sloom mattress. I would suggest getting a friend to help, but I was able to get the mattress out of the box after a few attempts. The mattress is then positioned, while still rolled up, and the outer wrapping must be cut/removed. Once the inner wrapping is removed, the mattress will expand automatically, and it is basically ready for use after a few minutes. The whole process from a mattress in a box to a mattress ready to be slept on, is quick and simple! The pillow is removed from the box and after the wrapping is removed, it expands in a few minutes.
The Mattress:
Sloom sell South Africa’s first and only customisable mattress. Sloom sent over their Original Mattress in the double extra length, for me to try out. The Sloom mattress is a customizable mattress made up of two foam layers, that can be rearranged according to the specific firmness that you prefer. The foam layers come in a removable and washable zip cover, with a textured white top and a grey bottom, with Sloom branding.
Inside the cover, you will find two interchangeable foam layers and each layer of foam has a different comfort layer on each side. This gives 4 comfort layers in total.
Each side of the foam layers is made of a different type of foam, to offer different levels of firmness. There is a soft, medium, firm and extra firm side. To choose the firmness that works for you, you simply flip the foam layer. Each side of the foam layer has a different colour, so you can tell which type of foam you are trying out! Sloom have ensured that only the best foams are used for a durable product and a comfortable sleep.
The mattress is suitable for a max weight of 150kg per person and has a 0% motion transfer, so there is no more waking up or bouncing around when someone else jumps into bed.
The mattress is compatible with most bases, but for now, I have placed the mattress straight on the floor as I still need to get a base.
The Sloom mattress is 100% made in South Africa and comes with a 25-year Service Warranty. Sloom offer free delivery anywhere in South Africa within 2-5 days of placing an order. Their prices are also affordable thanks to Sloom only selling online. There is no showroom or middleman!
Sloom will allow you to test out a Sloom mattress in the comfort of your home for 100 nights. Sloom suggests that one tests out the mattress for at least 60 days, and if after this period you are not satisfied, you get a full refund and Sloom will fetch the mattress for free.
The Sloom Pillow:
Sloom also sent me two Sloom Pillows, which are made of premium chipped ultra-dense memory foam, that offers soft luxurious support throughout the pillow. Using chipped Memory Foam makes the pillow more breathable and eliminates excess humidity. This results in a cooler sleep. The Pillow comes in a removable and washable soft cover, adding to the overall experience. The pillow is made from the same materials found in the Sloom Mattress, and offers superior support and comfort!
The Cost
Sloom sells mattresses in various sizes, which will determine the pricing, which can be seen on the Sloom website. The mattress I received came to R8800 and the Pillows were R600 each. Sloom also sells bases and headboards.
The Verdict
After testing out the Sloom Mattress and Pillows, it is clear that Sloom offers premium and super comfortable mattresses and pillows. I really like the fact that I can simply flip the layer of foam for a different level of firmness, depending on how I am feeling. If my back is sore after a long day, I can choose the firmness that suits me!
