In the Cape Flats, where safe spaces are scarce and opportunity is often shaped by circumstance, a discarded padel court has been transformed into something far more powerful than waste. It has become a place of play, belonging and possibility.
Through a groundbreaking circular economy initiative, Uthando South Africa, The Natural Building Collective, Great Commission United, Amazeballs, Cape Flats Sports Academy and many other partners have come together to launch the Pitches for Peace Initiative – a project that turns end-of-life materials into high quality sports infrastructure, bringing new opportunities for children within the Cape Flats community! Additionally, these facilities are safe & productive environments where skills including, gross motor skills, communication skills, life-skills, & mindset are imparted into boys & girls across the region!
In a powerful act of circular design, Racket & Ball donated decommissioned padel court surfaces that would typically be discarded. Working alongside Amazeballs, the material was repurposed and donated to the Cape Flats Sports Academy, where it has been transformed into a fully functional five-a-side soccer pitch turf. The first pitch has been installed at Athwood Primary School in Hanover Park, providing a safe, accessible sporting space in a community where such infrastructure is desperately needed.
From Circular Economy to Community Impact
Amazeballs is a sustainability-driven initiative that began by repurposing used padel and tennis balls and has since evolved to include a broader range of sports materials. At its core, Amazeballs exists to reduce waste, upcycle materials and support local communities through innovative recycling solutions that create jobs while giving back.
More than recycling for recycling’s sake, Amazeballs focuses on reimagining the full life cycle of sports materials – extending their value beyond play and redirecting them toward meaningful social impact. The initiative asks a simple but powerful question: what if waste was just the beginning of something new?
Through Pitches for Peace, that question becomes tangible. By rethinking how discarded sporting materials can be reused, the project demonstrates how circular innovation can deliver both environmental and social returns. It is sustainability in action – something communities can see, touch and benefit from directly.
The long-term vision is ambitious and deeply community-focused: to establish a five-a-side soccer pitch at every school in Hanover Park and Heideveld, reaching 15 schools in total. Each pitch represents more than infrastructure. It is a commitment to safer spaces, positive youth engagement and opportunity in communities where resources are limited but potential is abundant.
By connecting the circular economy to real community outcomes, Amazeballs is proving that sustainability is not only about reducing waste – it is about reinvesting value where it is needed most. To realise this vision at scale, Amazeballs & our partners need the support of like-minded businesses and sponsors who are willing to rethink what they discard and actively partner in turning surplus materials into meaningful community impact.
Creating Alternatives in High-Risk Communities
“In communities facing high levels of gangsterism, violence, crime and unemployment, initiatives like this offer something different – a proactive investment in infrastructure, opportunity and hope,” says James Fernie, Founding Director at Uthando. “Sport and music have the unique ability to unite people, create joy and give young people positive alternatives and a sense of belonging.”
Through Great Commission United & The Cape Flats Sports Academy, new pitches will form the foundation for structured community leagues and consistent sporting programmes. Where talent has always existed but facilities have not, these spaces will enable discipline, teamwork and long-term development.
At the same time, the project delivers a powerful environmental message. By showing how waste can be transformed into something meaningful, Pitches for Peace educates communities about recycling and circular thinking in a way that is practical, visible and inspiring. Importantly, it also challenges businesses to think twice about what they discard – encouraging organisations to re-examine their own waste streams and consider how surplus materials could be redirected to create social value rather than ending up in landfill.
A Shared Commitment to Purpose Beyond Profit
“To Racket & Ball, contributing to Pitches for Peace reflects a long-term commitment to purposeful community investment through sport,” says Matt Neethling from Racket & Ball. “Access to quality sporting spaces has the power to unite communities, build confidence and create opportunity where it is most needed. These courts are more than infrastructure – they are platforms for growth, belonging and positive change.”
Ashraf Allie, CEO of the Cape Flats Sports Academy, adds: “As a community organisation deeply rooted in the Cape Flats, we are proud to partner with Amazeballs, Uthando SA and all our partners. Football and cricket play a powerful role in steering youth away from social ills. Proper interventions like accessible sports programmes provide positive engagement and real opportunities to thrive.”
A Model for What Is Possible
Pitches for Peace demonstrates what can happen when businesses, non-profits and communities collaborate with purpose. By combining sustainability, sport and social impact, the initiative is creating spaces that foster peace, pride and possibility – while proving that the circular economy is not just about recycling materials, but about reinvesting in people.
As Amazeballs continues to expand its sustainability-driven work, the message is clear: when waste is reimagined with purpose, it can create opportunity, dignity and lasting community impact. To the businesses and sponsors reading this – we need you. We need partners who are willing to rethink what they discard and stand with us in directing resources, skills and surplus materials to the communities that need it most.
Waste To Wonder Campaign
Pitches for Peace falls under the broader Waste To Wonder Campaign, a sustainable building initiative focused on repurposing waste, to bring real value to under-resourced communities across the Cape Flats! By building with tyres, eco-bricks, and many other waste materials, we are cleaning landfills, while providing high-impact facilities to the communities who need it most!
