The Nissan Navara 4x2 continues to redefine ruggedness

f there’s one thing life has taught most car buyers over the years, it is to buy versatile vehicles. Yes, there are times when you feel the need for speed, but more often than not, you’ll feel the need for a vehicle that can carry a family and a caravan without breaking a sweat, or one that can carry two or more sets of golf clubs, or a vehicle that can take you on a much-needed fishing trip after a tough week at the office.

Given that more people are looking for practical, capable vehicles, Nissan is expanding the Navara range with a 4×2 Double Cab that’s ready for adventure, for life, for whatever you choose to throw at it. With 80 years of experience in building bakkies, Nissan knows how to manufacture workhorses that exude versatility while incorporating premium comfort features to rival most luxury SUVs.

Let’s not forget that redefining ruggedness is embedded in the Navara’s DNA and this is the reason why it was the first mainstream 1-ton bakkie to make use of a coil rear suspension that ensures superior handling and ride comfort.

Innovative new features

Have you ever wished you had eyes in the back of your head? The Nissan Navara takes this idea one step further with a chameleon-like Around View Monitor that uses a few cameras to display what’s going on around you.

The Navara Model Year 17 also benefits from enhanced insulation with further reductions in engine noise, vibration and harshness.

The Nissan Navara has a spacious interior, spinal support seats, Bluetooth audio streaming and Navigation standard across the range, and an intelligent key with stop/start button. All the essential features and creature comforts one needs to enjoy a more refined drive.

Established leader in technology

As the 2016 International Pick-Up of the Year, the Navara has the first coil spring five-link rear suspension in a mainstream 1-ton pick-up, which is fitted to its solid ladder-frame chassis.

The suspension set-up offers benefits normally associated with an SUV and these include better road-holding, car-like ride comfort and better traction through high-speed corners. Engineers found that the coil rear suspension was sturdier than traditional leaf springs. The Navara also has class-leading payload capacity of more than 1 ton and can tow a braked trailer up to 3,5 tons.

The Navara is available with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed automatic gearbox, which features gear ratios selected to specifically optimise the torque delivery of the new twin turbo engine and also offers a manual shifting function.

The on-board navigation system with 3D mapping and live traffic updates which is standard across the range, includes radio – with up to 30 pre-set radio stations, video in DVD/VCD/CD/MP3 or MPEG4 format, USB connectivity and Bluetooth with audio streaming – all operated from the steering wheel.

The Nissan Navara 4x2 continues to redefine ruggedness

To ensure it stands head and shoulders above the competition, the Nissan Navara has endured 40,000 rigorous tests over 1-million kilometres in settings all over the world. In addition, the Navara for the African market had to complete a number of local checks at high altitude and in treacherous Namibian sand dunes with enhancements to the suspension and high-speed brakes.

Stylish design with a purpose

Enjoy a first-class ride every day of the week with exceptional levels of safety, comfort and technology in the Navara 4×2.

The Navara has a 229mm ground clearance, but the raised suspension set-up and smart design have allowed for a 3-degree improvement in the approach (33.0 degrees), ramp-over (25.2 degrees) and departure angles (27.9 degrees).

There are larger doors for easier ingress and egress, a 23-degree slanted rear bench for greater comfort, more rear legroom and a host of creature comforts such as the first-in-class dedicated rear air vents and even an electrically operated rear cab window.

The impressive list of standard luxuries includes automatic LED headlights, dual-zone air conditioning, cruise control, three 12V sockets in the cabin, an automatic dimming rear view mirror and 7 airbags (including an airbag to protect the driver’s knees).

Power on tap all the time

The modern twin turbo 2,3-litre intercooled engine combines 140kW of power with leading fuel efficiency. It has strong, smooth acceleration and 450Nm of torque available from 1,500rpm.

The engine combines common rail direct injection and both a smaller, high pressure turbo and a larger, low pressure turbo to deliver more linear power throughout the engine speed range.

Pricing and range

The Navara 4×2 DC has class-leading load capacity of more than 1 ton and for ultimate peace of mind, Nissan Assured offers a class-leading warranty of 6-year/150,000km and a 3-year/90,000km service plan.

While the design is striking, it is undeniably masculine and confident, and there are also several Nissan Approved accessories to suit your lifestyle needs.

Geoffrey Chaucer famously said: “Time and tide wait for no man” and given that the Navara 4×2 is now on sale, you don’t have to wait to buy a robust, durable and stylish bakkie from a vehicle manufacturer that is considered legendary across Africa.
