Diamonds do Good announces April as Diamonds do Good Month

Nungu Diamonds is excited to announce its support of the inaugural Diamonds do Good month in April. Diamonds do Good is a global nonprofit organization based in New York, whose mission is to support programs that develop and empower people in natural diamonds communities and share positive impact stories. The establishment of Diamonds for Good carries a distinct South African legacy, inspired by Nelson Mandela, the inaugural President of a democratic South Africa.

Speaking on the initiative, Kealeboga Pule, Founder of Nungu Diamonds and Board member of Diamonds do Good comments, “Mandela’s fervour for education extended beyond the classroom to encompass enlightening the people of South Africa about the societal benefits derived from their own rich natural resources, such as diamonds. Drawing inspiration from Mandela’s passion for education and knowledge, Nungu Diamonds recognizes its responsibility in educating not only South Africa but also the broader African continent about the inherent value and good that are synonymous with diamonds as a precious natural resource”.

Renaissance Secondary School in Limpopo, located near the De Beers Venetia Mine, is one of the beneficiaries of this global initiative. Collaborating with De Beers and the Young Diamantaires, efforts are currently underway to build a Science Lab and install a reliable electricity source. These endeavours aim to ensure that the school provides a safe and dependable learning environment for students.

Here are some common Myths about Natural Diamonds: Separating Fact from Fiction

Myth 1: Natural diamonds are not unique.

Fact: Just like fingerprints, every natural diamond is one-of-a-kind. Unlike mass-produced lab-grown/synthetic diamonds, each natural gem bears its own story, shaped over billions of years deep within the Earth.

Myth 2: Natural Diamonds are harmful to the countries where they come from?

Fact: Up to 80% of the value of rough diamonds circulates within local communities, enriching lives through local purchases, employment opportunities, social initiatives, and infrastructure investments.

Myth 3: There is a limitless supply of diamonds.

Fact: It takes millions, even billions of years for natural diamonds to form deep within the Earth’s mantle. Imagine this: all the diamonds ever polished could fit in just one double-decker bus, while the yearly recovery of 1-carat diamonds fills only one exercise ball!

Myth 4: The natural diamond industry is harmful to the biodiversity in natural diamond communities.

Fact: Natural diamond mining companies protect approximately four times the land they use, partnering with governments and local communities to minimize environmental impact. Together, we safeguard biodiversity equivalent to the combined size of New York City and Los Angeles!

Myth 5: The bigger the diamond the better it is.

Fact: Contrary to the notion that bigger is better, natural diamonds are catalysts for socio-economic development in communities worldwide. Regardless of size, each gem is changing the lives of 10 million people globally.

The year 2024 represents the 30th year of democracy in South Africa. This significant milestone holds particular importance in Nungu Diamonds’ journey, as a new era of inclusivity granted access to an industry previously beyond the reach of black South Africans. The initiative encourages retailers to educate, equip and empower their customers to better understand the powerful life changing impact behind their purchase of diamonds.
