Nokia announces new portfolio of devices

“Where is my phone?” Think about the number of times you say these words in a day, reiterating how cellphones have become an integral part of our daily lives. Mobile phones have become more essential than ever before as many people work and study from home, connect with their loved ones and spend an increased amount of time online.

According to recent statics, the number of South Africans that have a smartphone in 2021 is 24.5 million[1]. As we become more reliant on our mobile devices a long battery life has become a top priority.  Staying connected is helpful in emergency situations where we need a device we can depend on. In South Africa power outages are a common occurrence which can last for hours and disrupt daily routines. In these circumstances a cellphone with good battery life can enable people to continue with their tasks and not be cut off from those that matter the most.

What would South Africans do with more battery power?

Results from a recent campaign by HMD Global, the home of Nokia phones found the below to be the top five things that South Africans would do with more battery power [2][3]:

  1. Of the participants surveyed 34% would use longer battery life for moments of escapism – binging their favourite series, movies, videos, reading to relax, listening to music, or scrolling through their favourite social media platforms.
  2. Thirty two percent (32%) of people would capture more memories – videos and photos for sharing on social media; take road trips while sharing special moments with loved ones and explore and visit new places.
  3. Increase in work productivity ranked as third with participants citing that they would stay online for longer, be more responsive to client needs and building-up a side-hustle.
  4. Enhancing their education through research, assisting with homework, submitting assignments, and dialing in to online classes ranked in fourth place, with more people turning to online learning and education.
  5. In fifth place, thirteen percent (13%) of respondents would stay connected through voice and video calls, or through messaging platforms.

Having more battery life equips people with more freedom and control over their day-to-day routines. HMD Global, the home of Nokia phones offers mid-range smartphone devices that feature chipsets from Qualcomm®, which assists in delivering a seamless user experience that saves battery power.[4]
