GMSA's HR Manager Launches Career Advice Journal for Women

Port Elizabeth – In the spirit of celebrating women during Women’s Month, General Motors South Africa’s (GMSA) human resources (HR) manager launched a journal containing career advice, called Sharing Success.

Inspired by the number of women in top leadership positions in her own company whilst attending the Global Women’s Leadership Summit in Detroit last year, HR manager, Luaneta Logie, decided it was time to share their success with aspiring young professionals within the company.  “I realised how many women there were in GM with fantastic career stories.

“Right then and there the idea of the journal was born. I wanted to document the career lessons that these women have learnt along the way and share it with other women,” she said.

Logie, who is also Chairperson of GMSA’s Women’s Council, has been working for the company for 14 years and is mentor to many female employees.

She said getting started was the challenging part, but with the forward written by Mary Barra, GM’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, the advice from other successful career women soon followed. “We received input from 24 female candidates across the globe and a number of contributions from local GM employees and we also added insights of other prominent philosophers.”

Being a journal, employees would be able to capture their developmental lessons, personal challenges and growth prospects, among others.

“We hope that the women embrace the book and make use of it. What makes the book so exciting is that it is a melting pot of diverse career advice from real women to other women,” said Logie.

Sharing Success has been designed in a way that the book can be replicated within GM globally. In South Africa, 1 500 copies have been printed for distribution so far.
