With mere days to go before PinkDay illuminates South Africa’s cricket calendar, excitement is already reaching fever pitch. The Proteas will be looking to maintain their undefeated PinkDay record when they take on Pakistan in the fourth Momentum ODI at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium on 27 January.
Faf du Plessis’ charges will take to the field, literally sitting pretty in pink on the back of a 3-0 whitewash of Pakistan in the prior Test series, although the ODIs have proven more competitive. The Proteas’ pink strip represents the squad’s support of breast cancer awareness.
Since 2011 the Proteas have been donning their pink attire annually and encouraging cricket-loving fans, players, officials and stakeholders to “pitch up in pink” for their recurrent PinkDay showdowns. In addition, all proceeds from the match go to the Breast Care Clinic at the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital in Johannesburg. The clinic treats over 200,000 patients and up to 350 cases of women with newly diagnosed breast cancer every year.
Last year alone, R1.7 million was raised for the clinic while this year Cricket South Africa (CSA) together with sponsors Momentum, the Central Gauteng Lions and Bidvest are aiming to top R5-million from the Momentum ODI PinkDay and associated events.
For the fourth year running, 100% not-for-profit social enterprise Relate Bracelets will also be playing a part in the action. Relate has again collaborated with world renowned fashion designer David Tlale to produce a bespoke bracelet for the event, which has been gifted by CSA to members of the Protea squad. Relate is hopeful that this lucky keepsake, crafted especially to mark the trust’s fourth year of partnership on this fourth ODI, will also be a shot in the arm in preserving the Proteas’ unbeaten run.
Relate CEO Neil Robinson says Relate Bracelets is proud to be an ongoing partner of the Momentum PinkDay ODI initiative, while showcasing Tlale’s design.
“This is another exciting opportunity for Relate and its partners to highlight breast cancer awareness and contribute to the R5 million target for the treatment of sufferers. David Tlale has generously given of his exceptional talents for this cause and our partners and we look forward to seeing his work on display.”
CSA is looking forward to seeing a sea of pink from fans on the day to show their support and contribution to PinkDay’s vital cause.
