Johannesburg – Opel Astra, winner of the European Car of the 2016 and finalists in the 2017 Wesbank South African Guild of Motoring Journalists Car of the Year competition, was the showcase of the day as local celebrities demonstrated their driving expertise around the Kyalami Racetrack on Wednesday.
Launched in April 2016, the Astra’s trendy new design is made for the dynamic city slicker and socially active young at heart who wants the solid quality and precision of a German-engineered car. The Opel Astra elevates any individual’s driving ambition and celebs grabbed the opportunity to experience an exhilarating drive in the Opel Astra.
It was an event filled with excitement and energy as some of South Africa’s finest including Skeem Saam actress Natasha Thahane; multi award winning hip hop artist Emtee and ANN7 news anchor and brand influencer Abigail Visagie to mention a few, prepared to take a spin on the track in the powerful Opel Astra.
Upon arrival, the stars were welcomed by the General Motors South Africa (GMSA) team and introduced to the stylish, reliable and dynamic features of the Opel Astra. “Now lighter than its predecessor, the Opel Astra is also more fuel economic thanks to the Stop/Start technology and boasts the IntelliLink Touch screen with satellite navigation and advanced infotainment” said Lunga Ntsendwana, Product Communications Manager at GMSA.
The design and engineering of the new Opel Astra is based on efficiency, design, connectivity, advance driver assistance and safety technology. The five-door hatchback is designed to meet fast-changing consumer needs and demands. It is affordable to run due to a lighter and athletic design, improved aerodynamics and powerful engines. After test-driving the vehicle on the Kyalami Racetrack, hip hop artist Emtee said, “This is the by far one of coolest and slickest car designs. The Astra is so stylish and I love that the technology is so current. The sound quality and touch screen technology really impressed me.”
The celebrities and influencers were excited to get first-hand experience of the Opel Astra especially since they got to drive around the famous Kyalami Racetrack. In a series of laps around the track they got to experience the features and powerhouse engine of the car. Then guests enjoyed a delicious lunch and sundowners while basking in the adrenaline of their drive. After her drive Natasha Thahane said, “It was such an exhilarating drive and I learnt so much about handling the curves. I was amazed by how well The Astra handled the curves with such ease whilst still feeling so comfortable”.
