CAPE TOWN: A security guard and two homeless men rescued a man from a burning car in the early hours of Monday morning in Sea Point.
Around 04h00, the driver of a Opel Astra hit a palm tree on Beach Road.
The car flipped onto its roof and caught fire. The driver was trapped inside the vehicle.
Maxwell Mhlawuli (41), a security guard at Chart Leigh House, and two homeless men, whose identities are still unknown, initially tried to get the car up.
“The trapped driver screamed for help, but we could not get the car upright because the flames were too hot, “said Mhlawuli said.
According to Andrew Newall, who lives in the home’s premises and who was also on the scene, the three heroic men grabbed the trapped man by the shoulders and miraculously pulled him from the car.
“The entire car were engulfed in flames seconds after the driver was rescued from the wreckage,” Newall said.
“I noticed that a car was on fire and immediately called for Mhlawuli to grab a fire extinguisher to put out the flames,” said Newall said.
Mhlawuli said that with the help of the fire extinguisher, it gave them just enough time to successfully rescue the trapped driver. “The driver sustained burns to his legs and was transported to hospital by an ambulance,” Mhlawuli said.
According to Newall, the three men deserve a hero’s applause because if it wasn’t for them, the driver would not have been alive.
At the time of publication the identity or the condition of the man who was trapped in the vehicle, were not yet known.
