BYD Auto South Africa has strengthened its SHARK 6 line-up with the introduction of the new BYD SHARK 6 Performance

New 2.0-litre turbocharged plug-in hybrid derivative delivers 700 Nm of torque, 3,50 kg towing capacity and enhanced technology

BYD Auto South Africa has strengthened its SHARK 6 line-up with the introduction of the new BYD SHARK 6 Performance, a more powerful flagship derivative that combines 350 kW of hybrid performance, a 3,500 kg towing capacity and enhanced technology in one of South Africa’s most advanced bakkies.

Joining the existing SHARK 6 Premium, the new Performance derivative gives South African customers an additional option within the range, combining increased power and towing capability with advanced plug-in hybrid technology, all-wheel-drive performance and a premium, technology-rich cabin.

At the heart of the SHARK 6 Performance is BYD’s latest DMO Super Hybrid system, which combines a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with front and rear electric motors.

Together, the system produces a maximum output of 350 kW and 700 Nm, enabling the SHARK 6 Performance to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds. Its maximum braked towing capacity increases to 3,500kg, making it suitable for customers who regularly tow boats, caravans, trailers or work equipment.

“The SHARK 6 has redefined what customers can expect from a bakkie, combining plug-in hybrid technology, strong performance and everyday practicality in one of South Africa’s most competitive vehicle segments,” says Steve Chang, Managing Director of BYD Auto South Africa.

“The new SHARK 6 Performance builds on that foundation with more power, greater towing capability and additional technology. At the same time, the SHARK 6 Premium remains an important part of our range, giving customers the flexibility to choose the model that best suits their lifestyle, towing requirements and budget.”

Plug-in hybrid performance for everyday driving

The SHARK 6 Performance is equipped with a 29.58 kWh battery, providing an electric-only driving range of up to 80km. When starting with a fully charged battery and full 60-litre fuel tank, the vehicle offers a combined WLTP range of up to 640km.

The plug-in hybrid system allows many shorter daily journeys to be completed using electric power, while the petrol engine provides the flexibility required for longer-distance travel, towing and driving in areas where charging infrastructure may be limited.

The vehicle supports AC charging at up to approximately 7kW, with a full AC charge taking around four hours. DC charging is supported at up to approximately 55kW, with a quoted charging time of around 35 minutes under suitable conditions.

Built for work, family life and adventure

Both SHARK 6 derivatives are equipped with BYD’s DMO, or Dual Mode Off-Road, all-wheel-drive system. The system combines the turbocharged petrol engine and front and rear electric motors to provide responsive power delivery, enhanced traction and all-terrain capability.

The SHARK 6 Performance also features Crawl Mode, which automatically manages the vehicle’s speed, power delivery and braking when travelling slowly over challenging surfaces. This allows the driver to focus on steering when navigating rocky terrain, sand, mud, steep inclines or other low-speed off-road conditions.

With 230mm of ground clearance, 18-inch wheels and all-wheel drive, the SHARK 6 Performance is equally at home tackling demanding worksites, weekend adventures and family getaways.

Vehicle-to-Load technology further extends its practicality by allowing customers to draw power from the vehicle’s battery. Built-in power outlets in the load bin can be used to operate equipment and appliances such as portable fridges, lighting, coffee machines and other devices when camping, working remotely or spending time away from conventional power sources.

Premium technology and connectivity

Inside, the SHARK 6 Performance retains the spacious, premium cabin associated with the SHARK 6 range while introducing several model-specific updates.

A new column-mounted gear selector creates additional space around the centre console and contributes to a cleaner cabin layout. The interior also features a large 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen, electrically adjustable front seats and a comprehensive range of comfort and technology features.

Google Automotive Services are integrated into the vehicle, providing built-in Google Maps navigation and access to selected applications through the Google Play Store. Customers can access navigation and selected Google applications directly through the infotainment system, reducing reliance on a connected smartphone.

Two SHARK 6 derivatives

The SHARK 6 Performance joins the existing SHARK 6 Premium, giving customers the choice between two plug-in hybrid derivatives. While both models share the same advanced technology, premium cabin and electrified driving experience, the new flagship adds a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, higher system output, increased towing capacity and additional technology features.

The BYD SHARK 6 Performance will be offered in four exterior colours: Outback Orange, Obsidian Black, Snowy White and Atlantis Grey.

The arrival of the SHARK 6 Performance further strengthens BYD’s growing New Energy Vehicle portfolio in South Africa, offering customers who demand greater towing capability and higher performance an electrified alternative without compromising on everyday practicality.

Pricing and availability

The BYD SHARK 6 Performance will be available to order through BYD dealerships nationwide, starting from R1,149,900.

The vehicle is supported by a five-year/100,000 km vehicle warranty, a five-year/100,000 km maintenance plan and an eight-year/200,000 km battery warranty, subject to BYD South Africa’s standard terms and conditions.
