Cape Town’s first LEGO® Certified Store is opening in Century City’s Canal Walk Shopping Centre on 28 September 2019, bringing this unique experience created by one of the world’s favourite brands to the city.

While LEGO products are available at independent toy retailers elsewhere in South Africa, LEGO Certified Stores stock and display a variety of LEGO options, exciting installations, exclusive and extended sets, and experiences that are not available in other toy stores and retail inventories.

“Our strategy of opening South Africa’s first LEGO Certified Stores in the busiest and most exciting malls in the country meant that choosing Canal Walk for our first outlet in Cape Town was a logical choice,” says Robert Greenstein, co-founder of the Great Yellow Brick Company and South African licence-holders of the LEGO Certified Store concept.

“Canal Walk is the Western Cape’s megamall and welcomes a diverse range of shoppers all year round, including LEGO fans of all ages. The overall retail experience provides the perfect platform for the LEGO brand, and it made great business sense for this mall to be home to our first outlet outside Gauteng,” he adds.

LEGO Certified Stores feature a number of exclusive product offerings and installations, including:

  • Pick A Brick Wall – a custom-built fixture with round canisters, each filled with an assortment of LEGO bricks and elements that fans can purchase in set priced cups
  • Build a Minifigure Station – a large variety of parts and accessories that allows shoppers to create customised Minifigures
  • An augmented reality screen that helps shoppers visualise the contents of box sets, in 3D, before they purchase
  • A locally-themed Cape Town mosaic, and a 3D model that captures the spirit of Bo-Kaap designed and built out of LEGO bricks by a local fan exclusively for the Canal Walk store
  • Special build areas to encourage fans to unleash their imaginations

Furthermore, the new LEGO Minifigures Series 19 will launch at the Canal Walk store opening, and will be exclusive to that store for the rest of the weekend.

“Customers can win a variety of prizes and other giveaways if they’re at the store on opening day,” Greenstein adds. “Our stores also have a loyalty programme, and shoppers will earn double points on all their opening day purchases at the Canal Walk store, as part of our launch celebration.”

“LEGO bricks and sets have been popular among South Africans for decades, and we’re delighted at the rapid pace at which LEGO Certified Stores are opening across the country,” says Kristian Imhof, Country Manager for The LEGO Group in South Africa. “Each store offers a uniquely local experience, underpinned by the high quality standards and remarkable focus on customer service for which LEGO Certified Stores are renowned worldwide.”

Canal Walk is Cape Town’s largest shopping centre, and is conveniently located on the N1, central to the CBD and surrounding suburbs.  The centre has a wide selection with over 400 stores and thousands of the best local and international brands to choose from. The LEGO Certified Store is located in Shop 526 on the upper level.

“The Canal Walk team is delighted to welcome Cape Town’s first LEGO Certified Store, as it perfectly complements our exciting mix of retail offerings,” says Gavin Wood, CEO at Canal Walk Shopping Centre. “The store’s on-trend blend of innovation, focus on shopper experience and appeal across generations adds a special new element to the mall.”

Capetonians not able to get to the Canal Walk store can buy the LEGO sets exclusive to the Certified Store on the Great Yellow Brick Co’s website.
