All-new Mazda CX-5 unveiled in Los Angeles
  • The compact SUV spearheads another new generation of innovative and attractive Mazdas.
  • New CX-5 is sleeker, sportier and safer with next-generation premium colour palette options.
  • Jinba-Ittai philosophy evolved for the benefit of the driver and passengers.
  • Automatic transmission introduced to the Dynamic model derivative.

Launched in 2012, the Mazda CX-5 was the first to introduce a remarkable new range of vehicles featuring SKYACTIV Technology and KODO Soul of Motion styling. It has since grown into a core model that is sold in over 120 countries and accounts for approximately one quarter of Mazda’s global sales volume. The outgoing Mazda CX-5 has been South Africa’s best-selling model with an average of 350 units a month.

Fully redesigned all-new Mazda CX-5 crossover SUV refines every element of Mazda’s design and technology; raising the bar for the line-up’s combination of fuel efficiency, driving fun, award-winning looks and top-class safety.

Feature updates on the 2017 CX-5 include LED head and front fog lamps, auto headlamp leveling, newly designed 17″ alloy wheels, rear ventilation, USB for rear centre armrest and auto door lock from the Active petrol derivative. Newly designed 19″ alloy wheels, leather seats, 8-way power adjustable lumber support driver seat and auto fold mirrors are added from the Dynamic model and from the Individual derivative; the 10 speaker BOSE system, head-up display, powerlift tail gate as well as the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) and Driver Attention Alert (DAA) advanced safety features.

The interior’s cabin insulation, windshield projected head-up display, improved seats and advanced ergonomics throughout, give a more cultured and intuitive “heads-up” cabin that prioritizes driver and passenger comfort. The new crossover SUV adds a new dimension to Mazda’s human-centric philosophy; extending the driver-and-car-as-one Jinba-Ittai sensation offering to all occupants. It also adopts the first of the SKYACTIV-VEHICLE DYNAMICS vehicle motion control technologies; G-Vectoring Control. This innovative software-based system controls body roll for better handling, while suspension and powertrain improvements facilitate superior ride quality.

With a solidly sporty yet refined stance, a lower roofline, sleeker sides and minimalist styling; the CX-5’s exterior exudes strength and maturity. Its bold character is accentuated with the offering of new additional colours from Mazda’s next-generation premium colour palette; Soul Red Crystal and Machine Gray Metallic. Soul Red Crystal colour has amplified depth and an almost gem-like translucency while Machine Gray Metallic colour achieves both high-contrast shadows and a high-density finish to give a realistic metallic feel.

South Africa’s powertrain lineup comprises of three engine options that offer powerful, linear driving performance and outstanding environmental performance; SKYACTIV-G 2.0L and 2.5L petrol as well as the SKYACTIV-D 2.2L diesel engines. All 2.0L engine derivatives are available in both the manual and automatic transmissions with the Dynamic derivative now offering an automatic option. The 2.5L petrol and 2.2L diesel engine derivatives are available with automatic transmission.

By providing the enjoyment of driving to everybody who drives or rides in one of its vehicles, Mazda aims to enrich people’s lives and become a brand with which customers feel an emotional connection.

The new Mazda CX-5 model range will be available 01 June 2017 at all Mazda dealers.

G-Vectoring Control system (GVC)

The G-Vectoring Control was born of Mazda’s human-centered development philosophy and the novel idea of using the engine to enhance chassis performance. It is the world’s first control system to vary engine torque in response to steering inputs in order to provide integrated control of lateral and longitudinal acceleration forces and optimize the vertical load on each wheel for smooth and efficient vehicle motion.

G-Vectoring Control detects steering inputs and slightly restricts engine torque output to shift vehicle weight forward slightly, adding more down force to the front tyres. A handling aid that aims to make racecar-like cornering precision something that every driver can enjoy, it leads to more direct handling and swifter reactions from the car which are interpreted more readily and accurately by the ‘human body’ – the driver – in control.

Advanced Safety Features – Individual and Akera only

Adaptive LED Headlights (ALH)

ALH has three major functions; glare-free High Beam, wide-range Low Beam and Highway mode. Glare-free High Beam recognises leading and oncoming cars, and turns off selected LEDs to avoid dazzling other drivers. When driving at speeds below 40km/h, the wide-range Low Beam expands distribution of light to increase driver’s visibility. Highway mode functions at speeds over 95km/h, increasing the distance low beam can illuminate the road behind a leading car, by controlling the axis of light.

Lane Departure Warning (LDW)

The Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) detects line marking on the road surface and warns the driver of unintentional lane departures. This system is particularly effective in situations where the road is continuously straight and drivers have a tendency to not pay sufficient attention to the road. When the lane change is accompanied by turn signal operation or acceleration, the system recognises the maneuver as intentional and does not sound an alarm.

Lane Keep Assist (LKA) – Astina Plus only

The functionality of Lane Departure Warning which creates an audible alert when the vehicle is about to stray from current lane is further enhanced by LKA which adds a slight amount of torque to steer the vehicle back into the lane (operates at speeds over 65km/h).

Smart City Brake Support (SCBS)

The Smart City Brake Support system (SCBS) is a safety feature that helps prevent or lesson low speed impacts. The system monitors the vehicle in front to assess the possibility of a collision at forward speeds of 4-80km/h.         In an event that the system detects a high risk of impact, it then issues visual and audible warnings and primes the brakes for a faster response should the driver brake.

Driver Attention Alert (DAA)

DAA is designed to reduce accidents caused by inattentiveness due to driver fatigue. The system is activated at speeds above 65 km/h and begins to “learn” the driver’s habits, watching inputs and the vehicle’s movements in the early stages before fatigue is a factor. Later, if the system detects changes in vehicle behaviour that suggests the driver may be losing concentration, it will suggest a rest stop by sounding a chime and displaying a warning in the Multi-Information.

Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM)

The Blind Spot Monitoring gives off an audible alert in the event that a vehicle is detected in the vehicles blind spot. It assists the driver by scanning the external mirror’s blind spots. The radar is able to detect any unseen vehicles and through an LED icon alert the driver to help avoid making a hazardous lane changes.
