When Peugeot launched its 2008 compact crossover in 2013, it recognised the growing demand for smaller, more versatile vehicles linking agile dynamics and a broader range of capabilities to a smart, comfortable and flexible interior.
Four years later, the new 2008 SUV has emerged as major success story, with global sales for the period exceeding the 760 000 mark. Not content to rest on its laurels, Peugeot has now unveiled a mid-life update that places a stronger emphasis on the 2008 SUV’s all-terrain DNA.
The new 2008 SUV model range will be launched to the public on Friday, 17 March 2017.
The refreshed 2008 SUV is a real head turner, with a series of aesthetic embellishments that will make motorists sit up and take notice.
The basic profile, with its stepped roofline, pronounced haunches and raked windscreen remains instantly recognisable, but there have been significant changes to the front styling and exterior detailing.
At the same time, the interior has been upgraded to match the exceptional design and execution standards set by the award-winning 308 hatchback. The much-publicised i-Cockpit now includes a generous 7’’ colour touch-screen display, with latest-generation connectivity and ergonomics.
Equipment levels have been further enhanced, ensuring that the 2008 SUV offers an even more extensive range of standard convenience and safety features than before. At the same time, Peugeot has introduced the sporty GT Line trim level to augment the Active and Allure packages. The 2008 SUV GT Line becomes the new flagship of the range.
The 2017 Peugeot 2008 SUV range consists of four models, spanning two engine choices, two transmission choices and three trim levels. The highly-specced Active model provides the entry point to the refreshed 2008 SUV range, and is offered in conjunction with Peugeot’s efficient and responsive 1,6-litre HDI turbo-diesel engine, coupled to a five-speed manual gearbox.
The two Allure models occupy the 2008 SUV range’s middle ground. The first links the Active’s turbo diesel engine and manual gearbox to the more comprehensive standard equipment list and elegant execution associated with the Allure package.
The second Allure model introduces the second drivetrain offered in the 2008 SUV line-up: an advanced PureTech 1,2-litre turbo petrol engine, coupled with a new six-speed automatic gearbox. The high specification level of the Allure package is identical across both models.
Assuming the flagship role, and introducing the GT Line trim level to the 2008 SUV for the first time, the 2008 GT Line boasts a sporty, crimson-themed execution inside and out, and an even more extensive list of key features, to Peugeot’s advanced PureTech turbo petrol engine and six-speed auto gearbox. The technical specification is identical to that of the Allure 1.2 PureTech Auto version.

“The new 2008 SUV ’s global success is already well established, and the upgrades, which include a more purposeful styling package, enhanced interiors and a choice of fuel-efficient, responsive drivetrains, should further extend our small SUV’s popularity.”
Harnie points out that the arrival of the revitalised 2008 SUV also serves as unambiguous proof of the PSA Group’s commitment to South Africa.
“The new 2008 SUV is the first of three significant new model releases planned for this year, all aimed at strengthening Peugeot’s presence in the country. While we are focusing on the Peugeot brand in the Southern African market as far as new products are concerned, our commitment to looking after all our existing customers across the PSA model spectrum as far as aftersales and servicing are concerned, remains undiminished,” Harnie concluded.
DESIGN
The redesigned aesthetics of the new Peugeot 2008 SUV provide the compact SUV with an assertive and adventurous character that clearly sets it apart from its more car-like predecessor.
The changes are mostly marked at the front of the vehicle. A bolder, more upright grille with an intricate, multifaceted grid design and a prominent Peugeot Lion emblem creates a resolute and contemporary impression, flanked on either side by the sleek, elongated shape of the black and chrome-masked headlights.
The raised bonnet is also new, contributing to the model’s more purposeful appearance, while the front and rear bumpers, sill protectors and wheel arch surrounds are finished in a contrasting solid black. Steel scuff plates front and rear further entrench an impression of rugged versatility.
The characteristic wave-shaped profile of the roofline has been retained, and is emphasised by roof rails, while an integrated roof spoiler adds a sporty element. The new LED taillights allow a three-dimensional expression of Peugeot’s trademark ‘claw-shaped’ light signature.
A raised ride height offers 165 mm of ground clearance, and emphasises the 2008 SUV’s proud stance. As before, the large tailgate opens wide and high to create a generous loading aperture with a low, 60 cm sill for easy access to the cargo area.
INTERIOR
All three trim levels, the Active, Allure and GT Line – employ smart, upmarket finishes and materials that create a premium impression. However, the interiors are also distinctively different, creating individual characters for each variant.
Attractive cloth upholstery is standard on the Active model, while the Allure and GT Line variants get half-leather upholstery with a contemporary, high-tech design.
Common to all is Peugeot’s latest iteration of the i-Cockpit concept, an innovative interior arrangement that combines a small, gripping steering wheel with a clearly legible instrument set and an unencumbered view of the road ahead.
This unique ergonomic approach also promotes a closer rapport between car and driver, thanks to the direct, unequivocal feedback provided by the steering wheel. The thick-rimmed, small-diameter design delivers a strong sense of tactile response, while also housing key controls for the audio system, hands-free telephony, speed limiter and cruise control systems.
The analogue instruments are housed in a smart binnacle with an illuminated surround that adds further lustre to the cockpit’s high-tech aura. The two dials frame a central, high-resolution display that offers trip-related data, including a digital speedometer, trip computer, gear change indicator and navigation instructions in models equipped with satellite navigation.
The high-res display in the instrument binnacle is a white LED display in the case of the Active, a white matrix display in the case of the Allure versions, and a colour matrix display on the GT Line. Binnacle illumination colour also varies according to model: white on the Active, blue for the Allure models, and red for GT Line.
However, the centrepiece of the new 2008 SUV’s dashboard is undoubtedly the large, centrally located colour touch-screen display, which is standard across the range. The 7’’ touch screen (18 cm) is located directly above the centre stack, and offers intuitive access to the Peugeot’s infotainment system.
Accessible via the menu-driven graphical user interface are the FM/AM radio, and audio playback from source devices linked to the system either via auxiliary input, the USB port, or by utilising wireless Bluetooth streaming. Integrated Bluetooth-based hands-free telephony is also accessible from the screen.
The infotainment system includes integrated support for Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink, which allow selected smartphone features to be displayed on the touchscreen display. The touchscreen also acts as the interface for vehicle set-up and system set-up menus, and displays the imaging from the reverse parking camera
A full-featured satellite navigation system is also accessible via the touch screen. The satnav system is standard on GT Line models.
Standard equipment is comprehensive across all four models, with the likes of remote central locking, electrically operated windows and mirrors, air-conditioning (full climate control on Allure and GT Line versions), rear park distance control, and hill start assistance all included.
The spacious interior is augmented by a generous 410 litre luggage compartment, which can be extended to 1 400 litres by folding the split rear bench seat flat. A low loading sill and wide-opening tailgate ensure convenient access to the boot, which houses a full-sized spare wheel.
SAFETY AND SECURITY
The latest Peugeot 2008 SUV offers a very high level of safety and security features, standard across the entire four-model range. The active systems include latest-generation ABS anti-lock brake control with electronic brake assist (EBA), as well as electronic stability programme (ESP).
The new 2008 SUV is equipped with six airbags (dual front, side and curtain airbags), as well as head restraints for all five seating positions, and inertia reel seatbelts. IsoFix tethers allow approved child seats to be safely secured.
The central locking system incorporates automatic door locking on pull-off, while electric child locks for the rear doors further improve occupant safety. Braking hard will automatically trigger the hazard flashers, too.
An alarm and immobiliser system is another factory-integrated feature that ups security by sounding an alarm if the system senses tampering or unauthorised entry.
DRIVETRAIN AND DYNAMICS
The new Peugeot 2008 SUV range consists of four models, utilising a choice of two drivetrains and spanning three trim levels. The drivetrains offer a choice of a 1,6-litre HDi turbodiesel engine, and PureTech1,2-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol unit.
The HDi four-cylinder turbodiesel has a maximum output of 68 kW at 4 000 r/min, linked to a 230 Nm torque peak, reached at just 1 750 r/min.
The HDi engine is offered in the entry-level 2008 Active model, as well as the full-featured Allure version, and is offered in conjunction with a five-speed manual gearbox only. Drive is to the front wheels.
The 2008 SUV range also offers two petrol models utilising the advanced and efficient PureTech 1,2-litre turbo unit. The three-cylinder engine is credited with 81 kW of maximum output at 5 500 r/min, together with 205 Nm of maximum torque, already on song at just 1 500 r/min.
This advanced petrol engine is offered in conjunction with a new and highly efficient six-speed automatic gearbox only, which contributes to its impressive fuel efficiency.
With a low kerb mass, aerodynamic shape and advanced drivetrains, the latest Peugeot 2008 models link sprightly dynamics to impressive fuel efficiency.
The two 2008 SUV turbodiesel 1.6 HDi manual models accelerate from rest to 100 km/h in 11,5 sec, and achieve a top speed of 181 km/h. Combined-cycle fuel consumption is an impressive 4,0 litres/100 km, linked to CO2 emissions of only 103 g/km, which is below the emissions tax threshold.
The two PureTech turbo petrol models post a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 10,1 sec, and are credited with a 188 km/h top speed. Here, the rated combined-cycle fuel consumption figure comes to 5,4 litres/100 km, while the CO2 emissions rating of 121 g/km is only marginally above the emissions tax threshold.
CHASSIS AND SUSPENSION
The underpinnings of the newly refreshed 2008 SUV are carried over from the original, and combine a MacPherson strut front suspension with a compact torsion beam arrangement at the rear. A 165 mm ride height allows the 2008 SUV to cope with a variety of terrain.
The entry-level Active model is fitted with 16-inch alloy wheels, while the other three derivatives ride on 17-inch alloys. Special M+S all-terrain tyres ensure added versatility over a broader range of terrain. A compact 10,4 m turning circle adds to the 2008 SUV’s overall agility and ease of use.
The GT Line model also benefits from Peugeot’s innovative Grip Control system, which adapts the drivetrain to a variety of conditions via a rotary controller in the centre console. It offers four modes: normal, snow, all-terrain and sand.
While ‘normal’ is the default mode, snow mode operates at speeds below 50 km/h and varies the urge between the front wheels while allowing controlled wheelspin to optimise traction.
In all-terrain mode, the 2008 SUV gains additional capability off the road. As much of the available torque as possible is transferred to the wheel with the most traction, thus operating as a virtual limited-slip diff at speeds of up to 80 km/h.
Finally, sand mode, at speeds of up to 120 km/h, again offers scope for limited wheelspin to prevent the 2008 SUV from bogging down in sand, and thus retaining momentum.
MODEL RANGE AND SPECIFICATIONS
The four-model Peugeot 2008 range kicks off with the 1.6 HDi Active, which is the most affordable member of the line-up, but still offers a comprehensive array of features. The drivetrain combines the frugal HDi 1.6 turbodiesel engine with a five-speed manual gearbox and front-wheel drive.
Exterior highlights include colour-coding for the door handles and heated exterior mirrors, with the latter also offering electric adjustment with a folding function. Roof rails are standard, too.
The new, multifaceted grille is flanked by two-tone black and chrome headlights, while low-mounted front fog lights are standard. The headlights offer a follow-me-home function, and incorporate daytime running lights, while the taillights are equipped with a full LED, three-dimensional ‘claw’ effect.
The smart, high-tech interior features Peugeot’s innovative i-Cockpit system and a high level of execution that includes exclusive cloth upholstery, a leather-rimmed steering wheel, and a leather-trimmed parking brake.
Standard comfort and convenience features include manual air conditioning, electrically operated windows front and rear, cruise control with a speed limiter function, a steering wheel adjustable for reach and rake, and a refrigerated glovebox.
The active and passive safety features are comprehensive. ABS braking with electronic brake force distribution and emergency brake assist is standard, as is ESP stability control.
Six airbags, remote central locking with auto-locking doors when driving off, hill start assistance, electric child locks, IsoFix child seat tethers, and auto-activating hazard lights when braking hard are all included.
The full-featured infotainment system includes a large central colour touchscreen display, a six-speaker sound system, USB and analogue 3,5 mm stereo inputs, Bluetooth-based music streaming and hands-free telephony, and an on-board trip computer.
Prospective 2008 SUV purchasers have two Allure models to choose from – the Allure 1.6 HDI, and the Allure 1.2 Puretech Auto.
As the nomenclature implies, the former employs the 1.6 HDI turbodiesel drivetrain with five-speed manual gearbox, while the latter is powered by the three-cylinder PureTech turbo petrol engine via a six-speed automatic transmission. Again, power is to the front wheels.
The Allure specification level includes all the features of the Active model, but with several enhancements. The Allure models are fitted with 17-inch alloy wheels shod with M+S tyres, while the front fog lights include a cornering function to illuminate the inside of curves when driving at night. Chrome and alloy embellishments create a smart, upmarket appearance.
The Allure interior features part-leather upholstery and blue illumination, while the upgraded equipment list includes fully automatic, bi-zone climate control, auto-activating headlights, auto activating windscreen wipers with rain sensor, an electrochromatic rear-view mirror, and tinted rear windows.
The new 2008 SUV GT Line model is offered in conjunction with the 1,2-litre PureTech drivetrain and six-speed automatic gearbox only. It mirrors all the features of the Allure versions, but has several unique characteristics.
Visually, the most important distinguishing feature is the gloss black detailing, which includes a Perla Black finish for the exterior mirrors, as well as blacked out roof rails, window surrounds and fog light detailing.
The multifaceted grille also gets a GT Line-specific design, and while the 17-inch wheels remain standard, the design is exclusive to the GT Line package. The overall impression is sporty and athletic.
The smart and sporty theme continues inside with half-leather upholstery that mirrors the GT Line’s athletic character. The full-house interior offers all the standard luxury, convenience and safety features of the Allure versions, but adds full-featured, integrated satellite navigation to the list.
Also unique to the GT Line version is Peugeot’s innovative Grip Control system which optimises the drivetrain for enhanced traversability in various driving conditions.
