5 weird things that people have stolen

Car theft and home burglaries are no laughing matter. This kind of crime is rampant in this country. You know what else is rampant in South Africa? Our ability to find that silver lining, to see the funny, to take these things in our stride. Before we press ahead with our main point (which is that there are completely bizarre things that people have decided to steal) we want to make something pretty darn clear. Just because we’ve found something to giggle at, doesn’t mean that crime isn’t serious. Because it is. However, there are some crimes that are plain silly, like people stealing an entire bridge.

Here are some of the weirdest things that have ever been stolen.

Starting with that bridge

A 38-foot-long bridge, to be exact. A couple of Russians (for it was in Russia) managed to actually steal a bridge in the dead of the night. It’s not just that they stole an actual flipping bridge… It’s that they were able to do it without drawing any attention to themselves. Also, they’ve never been caught.

Enough Nutella to finally satisfy 1 person

Nutella is synonymous with the chocolatey goodness that we all like to eat by the spoonful. We like to make a joke about not being able to get enough of the stuff and there are actually a couple of unscrupulous humans who decided that enough could never be enough. They stole around 5.5 tonnes of the scrumptious spread. Apparently what happened was that the opportunistic criminals noticed a delivery truck parked on the side of the road and couldn’t resist the temptation. It’s tough to judge them.

A giant inflatable gorilla

In sunny California, a chap (that’s right, just the 1) took it into his head that he absolutely had to have a giant inflatable gorilla that was strapped down with cables at a popular car dealership. We have no idea why he wanted it, how he did it, why he wasn’t seen and stopped… But it happened.

Enough sand to build a beach

We’ve all walked away from the surf with half the beach in our cozzies. But that’s just an exaggeration. We don’t really have as much sand down there as it feels. However, that doesn’t mean that it hasn’t happened. For this story, we head to Jamaica. In 2008, a couple of hotel companies wanted to extend their private beaches so they stole around 500 tonnes of the stuff. It took the cops months to crack the case, but at least they caught the criminals.

Taking safety first to the next level

There was once a man (let’s call him Keith Bradford, for that is his name) who took the concept of safe sex to a whole new level. He decided to up and steal a large condom machine from a pub. Unfortunately for him and fortunately for anyone at the pub who wanted to practice safety first, the police caught up with him while he was carrying it home.

Criminals sometimes have strange tastes when it comes to the things that they steal, but actually the vast majority of them have their eye on your car, home or cellphone. With this in mind, it makes sense to ensure that you’re covered. Just get a quick quote here
