Humanity has an innate need to celebrate, no matter what the occasion is. We celebrate birthdays and anniversaries, winning big on betway.co.za and leaving a job, we celebrate traditional holidays and the national day of… you name it. No matter what it is, it calls for a celebration. So, if you want even more things to be happy about and to celebrate, here are a few fun tips for 2019.

Gmail

Gmail was arguably the best thing that could happen to email – and this year, it turns 15. The service went into beta on April 1st, 2009 – and it wasn’t a joke but the first email service to break the gigabyte barrier. and its storage capacity continued to grow, ultimately reaching 15 gigabytes today. It has forever changed the way we look at email not only because of its intuitive interface and many features (like its built-in spam and malware filter) but because of its wide availability.

As of 2016, Gmail had 1 billion active users, many of them businesses (more than 90% of startups reportedly use Gmail).

The “Alien” franchise

On May 25, 1979, the movie theaters in the United States suffered an Alien invasion. This was the date when Ridley Scott’s pressing and disturbing science fiction horror movie “Alien” was first shown to the public. Initially, it was met with mixed critics – alas, the critics at the time didn’t have a taste for science fiction – and Fox claimed that the movie lost them money, even if its global box office revenue exceeded $200 million (close to $700 million today, or about ZAR 10 billion). The movie went on to win an Oscar for its visuals, its score received a Golden Globe nomination, it won a Hugo, three Saturn awards (for best director, best supporting actress – Veronica Cartwright, and Best Science Fiction), and went down in history as the movie that finally gave our nightmares a face, thanks to H.R. Giger, the Swiss artist who created the xenomorph.

In the 40 years that have passed since its release, the Alien franchise spawned three sequels, two prequels, the Alien vs. Predator franchise, a series of short films, board, role-playing, and single-player video games, countless books and comic books, art albums, and everything in between.

The first Moon landing

Last but not least, here is one event that has pushed humanity in the space age five decades ago: on July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed the Apollo lunar module Eagle on the surface of the Moon. Six hours later (on July 21st, at 2:56 AM UTC) the first human set foot on the surface of our cosmic companion, uttering the immortal words “One small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind”.

The first Moon landing transformed humanity into a space-faring race, ended the Space Race, and opened up the doors to the stars. What’s not to celebrate?
